In addition to recognizing the ‘Best of the Best’ within the media industry, the Genii Awards is a fundraiser for AWM SoCal Foundation and its student scholarship program. The 2016 scholarship recipients were selected by a distinguished panel of volunteer judges from SAG-AFTRA, CBS, Starcom and more. Applicants from diverse backgrounds, interests and majors within Southern California applied for consideration.

“This year, we had a record number of scholarship applications,” said AWM SoCal president Samantha Brown. “The achievements of Paige, Faith and Amia underscore the core values of AWM SoCal. We heartily congratulate them on their well-deserved awards.” The nonprofit organization’s Southern California Affiliate, established in 1952, helps to empower and fuel the professional development of women across the media landscape.

Los Angeles native Paige Parker is set to graduate this spring with her Master of Science degree in broadcast journalism from USC’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. She aspires towards a career in broadcast TV where she can combine her love for adventure with her passion for creating.

Faith Strongheart is an emerging director with a unique visionary style. She has almost completed her third year of graduate school at UCLA where she is studying directing and is finishing her latest short film, Je Suis Une Mère (I Am a Mother), about a woman struggling to balance work and family.

Amia Yokoyama is a graduate student at California Institute of the Arts, pursuing an MFA, and a multi-media artist who works with experimental animation, video, 2D mixed media, sculpture and installation.

The AWM SoCal scholarship fund was established to aid in the higher education of promising students. This fund complements the AWM SoCal mission: to advance the impact of women and men in the electronic media and allied fields by educating, advocating and acting as a resource to its members and the industry.
