Did you know that one in six people in Los Angeles are impacted by hunger— affecting young and old alike?

Los Angeles, CA  - (Tuesday, November 10, 2015) Join KTLA 5’s Wendy Burch and Alliance for Women in Media Southern California (AWM SoCal) Saturday, December 5th from 9 a.m. to Noon at the Los Angeles Regional Foodbank for a morning of community service to help fight hunger. Members of the local media and entertainment community are invited to help box food and create awareness for LA Foodbank’s ever-increasing demand for volunteers and donations. Volunteers are needed to sort, inspect, and repackage donated food items from local food drives for those in need.

"I've delivered countless reports on how to burn off excess calories...while so many in our community are yearning just to get more of them," says Burch. "Donating my time at the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank is just one small way to help balance the scale."

Hunger affects young and old alike. Due to the rising cost of living, even families with two incomes often can’t make ends meet or put enough food on the table. Plus many times low income seniors can’t afford to pay for both their bills and food, so they make the difficult choice to go hungry in order to afford things like their medicine or making a utility payment.

An estimated 16% of those who live in Los Angeles County are food insecure, equaling 1.7 million people who struggle to obtain enough food each week— and 400,000 are children. (That’s equivalent to the total population of the San Fernando Valley).

“The LA Foodbank serves over 280K people each month and reaches 7.1 million annually,” states Samantha Brown, AWM SoCal Co-President. “It’s understandable why ongoing help is needed to donate food and prepare boxes for redistribution to the needy. We’re calling on our media community to lend a hand and help us spread the word.”

As the holiday season approaches, please include this important message in your media outreach to the general public and join KTLA 5’s Wendy Burch and AWM SoCal for a rewarding morning of giving back to our community. For more information, visit www.awmsocal.org/events.

Every $1 provides food for 4 meals for hungry children, families and seniors in L.A. County. Take a bite out of hunger. Donate at www.lafoodbank.org/donate.

AWM SoCal Presents Two Great Events in November
    to Empower Women in Media

11/12 Suffragette Screening and Q&A at IPIC Theatre
11/7 Career Agility Panel at the Grammy Museum

Los Angeles, CA  - (Thursday, October 29, 2015) Votes for women, what media execs look for when hiring and emerging talent in Hollywood are all topics of conversation during  Alliance for Women in Media SoCal's line-up of November events. "AWM SoCal is thrilled to offer monthly events designed to empower women within their media career and in their life," states Bonnie Gallanter, AWM SoCal Vice President of Events. "We are honored that Focus Features is screening Suffragette for our organization November 12th followed by a conversation with director Sarah Gavron and screenwriter Abi Morgan."

The film depicts the turn of the century struggle for women's right to vote and sheds a timely light on the current struggle women are facing right here in our own backyard. Gender inequality in Hollywood is well-documented and in the entertainment industry the lack of female directors has prompted the EEOC to launch an investigation. Last year, women directed less than 5% of major studio releases.  Suffragette's female director/writer team will share their film making experiences in a much anticipated conversation following the screening.

Helping employers, champions and mentors find qualified female media employees will be part of another discussion at Career Agility - a Max Edwards Company professional development series of panels being held at the Grammy Museum's Clive Davis Theatre at LA Live, November 7. "Media industry executives will discuss what they look for in employees, those they champion, and the select group they mentor," remarks LaFern Cusack, Host/Sr. Producer, ESPN LA/PromaxBDA and AWM SoCal Advisory Board Member.

Cusack is a guest speaker on the Career Agility Emerging Professionals Panel, where participants discuss how to survive and stay relevant in today's global marketplace. For more information, visit www.awmsocal.org/events.
